As part of a proactive strategy preventive maintenance is a scheduled activity performed regularly to help prevent unexpected failures in the future. “Fix it before it breaks” “Schedule it before it schedules itself.”
Preventive Maintenance can be calendar or time based, much like your annual physical. Usage based, like performing an oil change after 3,000 miles. Predictive or condition based, what is the condition of the equipment, age, environment, how often does it operate then estimate when maintenance should be scheduled using analytics and/or algorithms. or prescriptive using information about the expected lifecycle of a specific equipment model combined with historical data, often these days in conjunction with IoT and sensors such as vibration analysis.
Preventive Maintenance is part of an Electrical Maintenance Program (EMP) which NFPA 70B defines as “[a] managed program of inspecting, testing, monitoring, analyzing, and servicing electrical systems and equipment with the purpose of maintaining safe operation and… reducing or eliminating system interruptions and equipment failures.”
